Speaking to BBC News, Mzee Grishon struggled to contain his emotions as he recounted the tragic night when torrential waters engulfed their community, leaving destruction in its wake.

"Hii ni nyumba ya kijana wangu," he recalled, gesturing towards the remnants of his son's home, now a haunting reminder of the tragedy that befell his family.

With a trembling voice, he described the horrifying moment when the rushing floodwaters breached their dwelling, forcing them to seek refuge and pray for salvation.

According to Waiganjo, rushing water grew louder with each passing moment, prompting him to awaken his loved ones and prepare for the impending danger.

Flood waters leave behind destruction

However, despite their efforts to barricade themselves inside, the merciless deluge soon inundated their home, leaving them stranded and helpless amidst the chaos.

"Sisi tukaka kwa nyumba tukaomba Mungu asitumalize na maji," he recounted, recalling the desperate prayers they offered as the floodwaters relentlessly encroached upon them.

As dawn broke the following morning, the full extent of the devastation became painfully clear to Waiganjo and his family.

Amidst the debris and destruction, they discovered the heart-wrenching truth – their two beloved sons were among the victims claimed by the raging floodwaters.

"My son is gone, the goats have been swept away," he lamented, his voice trembling with grief. Despite their overwhelming loss.
