The County Government of Mombasa has designated the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to oversee the collection of parking fees for heavy and commercial vehicles and solid waste management charges for marine vessels.

Collection of commercial vehicle parking fees

Under the first notice, heavy and commercial vehicles used by port users within Mombasa County will be subject to parking fees.

This includes vehicles associated with grain bulk handling limited, AGOL limited, empty container depots, refineries, and other port users who operate within port terminals without accessing port premises.

"In light of this designation, the Kenya Ports Authority will ensure the efficient and effective collection of parking fees from heavy and commercial vehicles operated within these areas with effect from 15th May 2024," KPA announced through a customer notice posted on X.

Waste management fee for marine vessels

Additionally, KPA will begin collecting waste management charges for marine vessels at the port of Mombasa, as mandated by the Mombasa County Solid Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2023.

"The charge will be two (2) US dollars (about KSh 260) per one hundred tonnes based on a ship's gross registered tonnage.
The minimum charge on a ship shall be 200 (two hundred) United States dollars (about KSh 26000), and the maximum charge shall be 1,500 (one thousand five hundred) US dollars (about KSh 200000) for every seven days," KPA announced in a second customer notice.

Certain exemptions are provided, including ships owned or operated by the government, Kenya Ports Authority, authorised ferries, ships of less than five hundred gross registered tonnage, ships trading between ports in Kenya, dredgers, and vessels at stream or anchorage.

Abnormal load leaves Mombasa Port

In other related news, fresh waves of excitement swept across Kenya as reports emerged of yet another abnormal load embarking on a journey from Mombasa to Uganda.

This came closely on the heels of the successful arrival of the initial abnormal load at its destination in Uganda.

The latest abnormal load was reported to be under the transport management of BTS Clearing and Forwarding Limited.
