Evans Koskei Kurgat left Kenya to chase a better life in Australia, but sadly, he ended up in prison and back home in Kenya after he was deported without being given a second chance.

Koskei starts paying KSh 20k rent weekly

Speaking in an Interview with TUKO Talks, Koskei shared that he had just completed Journalism and Media Studies at Eldoret College of Professional Studies in 2012 when he learnt of a chance to go to Australia for further studies.

"My neighbour who had learnt about it on the radio told me, and I floated it to my dad. With my mum's help, we got a chance at the South Australia Institute of Business and Technology," shared Koskei.

"My father paid a lot of money and we got a ticket from a funds drive," he added.

Once Koskei got to Australia, it was not all rosy as no one told him how to make a living; he thought the lady who picked him up at the airport would give him a job the following day.

Koskei landed at a building that housed students, among them Kenyans, but the rent was too steep; KSh 20,000 a week.

Since he was jobless, he played hide and seek with the landlord for some time until he learnt about Age Care.

"My father paid twice, then fell into depression. The landlord would drink alcohol and then become aggressive towards me. I used to hide and seek and eventually, my roommate kicked me out," said Koskei.

What is Age Care?

Age Care entails taking care of the elderly, and Koskei learnt about it from a friend after he had suffered in Kenya for some time.

"You are taught how to use the hoist machine, lift the elderly, wash, dress them and apply makeup on them," said Koskei.

Koskei moved to Templeton after things started looking up for him. There, he met other Kenyans, but sadly, it was bad company, and he started abusing alcohol. He also got into a toxic relationship with a lady who used to hit him with a bottle whenever they got drunk.

"During a party one day, my girlfriend took a bottle and hit me; because I was excessively drunk, I reacted but did not hit her. In Australia, you cannot dare hit a cat, lady and a dog; you will be fined or arrested," shared Koskei.

Koskei taken to Modbury Police Station

After the unfortunate incident, the lady allegedly colluded with an Italian man in their house, and they called the police.

He was arrested and taken to Modbury Police Station, then later transferred to prison over assault charges.

"I stayed in prison for three months, and the lady's parents prevailed upon her to drop the case, and she agreed to drop the charges. I was later released and deported. I was depressed for a long time until I met a lady called Phyllis," said Koskei.
"She helped me and supported me; she has become one of the best pillars in my life. I will never leave her," said the grateful man .

Koskei is a trained journalist, and he told TUKO.co.ke that he is now looking for opportunities in the field.

"Alternatively, I can start telling stories from my home area if well-wishers help me get the necessary equipment," said Koskei.

Kenyan man faces deportation after scam

In January 2024, an Australia-based Kenyan student named Victor Muiruri was facing deportation over his involvement in fraudulent pet dealings.

Muiruri was found guilty of being part of an elaborate internet scam that stole over KSh 6 million from animal lovers seeking to buy pets.

The 29-year-old was sentenced to 12 months in jail and is currently in a detention centre.
