As Kenyans continue to reel from the floods' effects, Margaret Njeri and her husband, Peter Ngunjiri, are among the most affected.

This is after the couple's greenhouses were ravaged by the floodwaters, rendering most of their crops useless.

Farming journey has had ups and downs

Njeri told TUKO.co.ke that their journey to owning Njena Farm started a few years ago when they decided to enter the agriculture industry.

Initially, they were satisfied with trading vegetables from local vendors, but a spark of ambition ignited within them over time.

After struggling for a while, they studied the market and felt compelled to focus on growing indigenous vegetables, a decision that paid off.

"Our journey has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but through it all, we've remained steadfast in our dedication to the land and to each other," she praised.

Turasha River burst its banks

Everything went well until the skies opened recently, and heavy torrents pounded the country, leaving most parts flooded.

The tranquil Turasha River, which provided them with water for irrigation for years, became a raging hazard that swept through their land.

Months of hard work were washed away instantly, crushing the greenhouses and leaving withered strands of crops behind.

Njeri says that before starting the journey, those who had been long in the game warned her that farming would try to kill her.

"I was prepared for the challenge, but what I wasn't prepared for was that it would happen on my birthday. How fitting," she noted.

Despite the setback, the farmer maintains that they will dust themselves and rebuild from the ground up.
