Controversial Mombasa-based preacher Paul MacKenzie has asked the court to grant him access to his wife and soap, as there is an outbreak of rashes in male cells.

According to his lawyer Lawrence Obonyo, there is a shortage of bathing soap in the cells.

"It is likely that there has been an outbreak of skin rashes affecting detainees, especially men. The government should look for a situation. They are asking for soap to manage the situation," Obonyo requested.

Mackenzie's wife Rhonda Mumbua has also been charged alongside him and is currently detained at Shimo La Tewa Women's Prison.

Why Mackenzie wants to meet his wife

In a report by NTV, Obonyo said the two had family matters to attend to and should be given time to meet each other.

“They are a couple, with children. Mackenzie has instructed me to request the court to issue an order for the prison authorities to allow him to meet his wife. They want to discuss issues about their children,” said the lawyer.

In their statement, the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) stated that Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku allowed his application but under strict supervision.

"The Chief Magistrate allowed Mackenzie's application to meet his spouse Rhonda Mumbua, under strict supervision of the prison's authority," ODDP stated.

When is Mackenzie's next hearing?

Both Mackenzie and his co-accused pleaded not guilty to all accounts of mysterious deaths, which were read to them according to the ODPP.

Their case will be mentioned on Monday, April 13, 2024, for a pre-trial to fix a hearing date.
