Beatrice Chebet has missed Gudaf Tsegay's 5000m world record at the 5000m at the Zurich Diamond League.

The Kenyan star clocked 14:09.52, falling short in her world record attempt.

Chebet led the race from start to finish, with the clock her only opponent on a rainy evening. However, it wasn't to be.

The race was billed as a world record attempt, and Chebet was keen on smashing Gudaf Tsegay's world record.

She took the lead and won on track to break it in the first few laps. However, she began to fade as the race wore on. Some of the top 5000m runners, like Faith Kipyegon, Nadia Battocletti, and Sifan Hassan, were not on the field to push her.

Ejgayehu Taye of Ethiopia was her closest competitor but could keep up with Chebet, who bagged gold in the distance in Paris.

Taye clocked 14:28.76 to finish second, while her compatriot Tsigie Gebreselama was third in 14:39.05. Chebet now holds the seventh-fastest time in the distance, per World Athletics.

The 24-year-old was competing in her first race since winning two gold medals at the Paris Olympics. She will likely attempt to break the world record at the Diamond League final.

Chebet bags 10,000m gold
