Ugandan leftist politician Bobi Wine is in hospital after being caught in an alleged shooting incident on Tuesday, September 3.

He was in Bulindo, central Uganda, to check on one of his faction's associates when the police reportedly sandwiched them.

Through his official X account, Bobi claimed the state law enforcers started opening fire at them.

He sustained a supposed gunshot injury after a live round pierced through his leg.

However, in an official communique, the Ugandan police denied shooting at the politician.

Did Ugandan police shoot Bobi Wine?

They said Bobi and his team objected to a police advisory against them proceeding with a process to Bulindo town.

The team proceeded with their procession, prompting a reaction from the officers who went ahead to book them, an altercation ensuing in the process.

Whilst Bobi and his party claimed he was shot in the leg, the police said the politician sustained the leg injury after stumbling while boarding his vehicle.

"During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas him and his team assert that he was shot," partly read the communique from the police.

They, however, vowed to probe the incident and establish facts before appropriate actions are taken.

How Bobi Wine became Museveni's new headache

A one-time singer, Bobi rose to be one of President Yoweri Museveni's resilient challengers in the build-up to the 2021 Ugandan elections.

Despite a remarkable campaign in the vote, Bobi, in his first attempt at the presidency, was routed by Museveni, who won the vote despite accusations of electoral malpractices and rigging.

He has held onto his stance against Museveni, whom he accuses of advancing dictatorship and authoritarianism in Uganda.

Bobi and his family suffered at the hands of the state authorities, which often arrested and detained them.
