Faith Kipyegon will be among the star attractions at the newly formed Athlos NYC event in New York next month.

The women's only event is the brainchild of Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and husband of tennis great Serena Williams.

How much will athletes earn from Athlos NYC?

The event is set to offer one of the largest prize purses ever over for a women's track event. Ohanian has previously lamented that the money professional athletes get from other notable events like the Diamond League doesn't commensurate with the work they put in.

"The money these athletes get for winning the Diamond League finals is 30,000 USD. This is inadequate simply because you cannot be a professional athlete, and the top prize is 30 grand," he said in a TikTok video.

Which events will be at Athlos NYC?

The 41-year-old then came up with a new event that is set to revolutionize how much athletes get paid. The Athlos NYC will be a women's-only event with only six events for a start - the 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 800m and Kipyegon's baby, the 1500m.

Athlos NYC Prize money

Here is where it gets interesting—the winners at the Athlos NYC will walk away with a 60,000 USD paycheck, which is approximately 7.7 million Kenyan shillings at the current exchange rate. Second place will get 25,000 USD, third will get 10,000 USD, fourth will get 8,000 USD, fifth will earn 5,000 USD, and sixth will earn 2500 USD.

On top of that, athletes will get more money through the giveback program.

"10% of all revenues from ticketing, commercial sponsorship, and broadcast will be re-distributed to all participating athletes," as captured on the website.

Who is participating in Athlos NYC?

Apart from Kipyegon, newly minted Olympic champions Gabby Thomas (200m) and Marileidy Paulino (400m) have accepted the invitation.

Others include Tokyo 100m hurdles silver medalist Kendra Harrison, Alexis Holmes, Torrie Lewis, and Lieke Laver, among others. There will be 36 athletes for the first event next month.

Megan Thee Stallion at Athlos NYC

Additionally, fans are set to be entertained by Body hitmaker Megan Thee Stallion. DJ Derrick D-Nice will also curate the personal music that the athletes will walk out with before their races.

When will the inaugural Athlos NYC be held?

The event will be held on September 26 at the Icahn Stadium in New York.

Why is the event called Athlos?

The idea, which was conceived in April, was first known as the 776 Invitational but was later changed to Athlos under the motto, 'Catch her if you can.'

"Athlos: a word steeped in ancient Greek tradition, embodying the essence of excellence and triumph."
