India - A family is in mourning after a tragic accident on the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar-Pune Highway, where their vehicle was hit by a speeding Jeep, resulting in the death of four relatives.

The family had been returning from the village where they had taken their baby for the traditional naming ceremony.

Police said the deceased were residents of the Shivne area in Pune and were returning from Amravati to the city in their private car, according to The Times of India.

Among those who died include, Mrunalini Ajay Besarkar, 38; her mother-in-law Ashalata Poplaghate, 65; Durga Ajay Gitte, 7 and a six-month-old boy.

The injured include Ajay Ambadas Besarkar, 40, and his sister-in-law Shubhangini Sagar Gitte, 35.

According to the police, the driver of the Jeep was driving under the influence of alcohol and did not have a driving licence.

How did the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar accident happen

A 23-year-old Vishal Kere, and co-passenger, Krishna Kere (19), who were all drunk, were arrested by the police.

"The two in the Jeep were found heavily drunk. During interrogation, Vishal and Krishna said they were drinking since 11am. The accident occurred around 3pm, when they were headed towards Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar," Waluj police inspector Rajendra Sahane said as reported by Hindustan Times.

According to the police officer, Vishal was driving the car at high speed before losing control and crashing into the car on the other side of the road.

"He lost control over the jeep, which first hit the median and then collided with the car on the other side of the road," he said.

How many Kyoani Secondary School students died?

In other sad news, it emerged that three of the six children who were hit and killed by a speeding vehicle at Kyoani Market in Ikutha, along Kibwezi Road, were from the same family.

According to Nation, neighbours established the identities of the six children as they quickly responded to the accident.

The pupils included two Form Three girls and a Form One girl, all of whom were students at the nearby Kyoani Secondary School.

The other two females and a boy used to attend the nearby Kyoani Primary School in Kitui county.
