Rameswaram - A family is in mourning after a tragic accident on the Rameswaram Highway, where their taxi collided with a stationary government bus, resulting in the deaths of five relatives.

The family had been returning from the hospital, where they had taken their newborn baby, who was unwell.

According to the police, the father had hired a private taxi to rush the baby to a health facility, according to The Hindu Bureau.

Among those who died on the spot were Rajesh, the newborn's father, along with his daughters Dharshana Rani (8) and Pranaveeka (5), his father-in-law Senthil Manoharan (70), and mother-in-law Angaleswari (60).

The 12-day-old baby, his mother, and the taxi driver survived but sustained serious injuries.

They were transported to Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a government hospital for postmortem and other formalities.

How did Rameswaram Highway accident occur?

According to ETV Bharat, preliminary investigations by Uchipuli traffic police indicated that the government bus driver had parked on the highway to assist a commuter who was feeling unwell.

During this stop, the taxi crashed into the rear of the bus, leading to the fatal incident.

Meanwhile, an investigation into the accident is underway.

13 people die in Katiola-Niakara Road crash

In another tragic story, 13 people perished after their bus collided with a petrol-filled tanker along the Katiola-Niakara Highway.

According to the national monitoring authority, the accident occurred as the road was narrowed by a freight truck that had parked on the road without indicators.

Other 46 passengers also sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care.
