"All police officers have received a salary raise effective July 1, 2024. In the first phase, uniformed officers received a basic salary increase of 40% for constables, with the percentage gradually decreasing for higher ranks, down to a 3% increase for senior officers," said Interior PS Raymond Omollo.

Officers drawn from the Kenya Prisons Service and the National Youth Service (NYS) will also begin receiving the increased pay from September 2024.

Retired chief justice David Maraga's task force made the recommendations that are being rolled out.

How will Maraga reforms be implemented

The government observed that the changes within the services would be done for a period of four years.

The PS said that to ensure seamless implementation of the reforms, they had established technical committees that had already been gazetted.

"The reform process is set to take four years, from 2024 to 2028, guided by a strategic framework that focuses on four core areas that is leadership within the three services, oversight and accountability, institutional capacity development and human resource management, and operational preparedness and logistical capability," he added.

SRC approves salary increase for police officers

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that Ruto directed the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review civil servants' salaries up by 7% to 10% in August 2024.

SRC recommended a pay rise of KSh 27.1 billion to be paid to public workers, out of which the Kenya National Police Service (NPS) received 3.6 billion.

Then Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome confirmed the salary increment that would see the least paid officer take home KSh 34,135.
