Uasin Gishu - Governor Jonathan Bii has nominated Tembelio Member of County Assembly Evans Kapkea as his new deputy.

Who is Evans Kapkea

On Wednesday, August 21, Bii forwarded Kapkea's name to the county assembly for vetting in accordance with the County Government Act, 2012.

“Following the resignation of Deputy Governor John Barorot and in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 32D 1 (a) of the County Government Act, 2012, the Governor has today the 21st Day of August, 2024 nominated Mr. Evans Kipruto Kapkea as nominee for the Deputy Governor, County Government of Uasin Gishu, and forwarded the name to the County Assembly for vetting and consideration,” read a statement to newsrooms.

Kapkea is the chairperson of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly’s Trade, Industrialization, Tourism and Investment Committee, and a member of the Budget, Finance and Appropriations Committee, Health Committee and Delegated Legislation.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Analytical Chemistry with Computing from the University of Eldoret and is currently pursuing an MSc. in Analytical Chemistry at Moi University.

What Evans Kapkea said about his nomination

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Kapkea disclosed that he got the news about his nomination by surprise.

Kapkea, aged 34, revealed that he was at the county assembly performing his normal duties when he heard about his nomination as the next Uasin Gishu deputy governor.

"I was in the assembly performing my normal duties, and I also got the information by surprise, like anyone else. But I want to thank God and the governor for having faith in me. I am ready for the job and I know I am capable," Kapkea said.

Why John Barorot resigned as deputy governor

As reported earlier, Uasin Gishu deputy governor John Barorot announced his resignation on Monday, August 19, at a meeting with senior county officials

Governor Bii was present when his deputy made the announcement, but the governor will make the official communication public at a press briefing.

Addressing the media, Barorot said he resigned because he secured an international job in the ICT sector.

He said he had a good working relationship with the governor over the last two years, and they discussed his exit last month.
