The former vice president addressed a media briefing, explaining why he did not attend the much-publicised event.

According to Kalonzo, he intended to demonstrate his new status as the official opposition leader to Kenyans.

"I'm not at State House today because I want to show you I'm the official opposition leader. Azimio will not dissolve," Kalonzo said.

Did Azimio leaders endorse Raila's bid?

However, together with other Azimio la Umoja leaders, Kalonzo endorsed Raila's bid for the AUC position.

In a statement, Azimio leaders cited Raila's extensive political experience, commitment to Pan-African ideals, and track record of conflict resolution as crucial reasons for their support.

The opposition coalition expressed confidence in Raila's ability to lead the African Union to greater peace, stability, and prosperity.

"We are donating to Africa and the world our best and most renowned leader," the statement said.

What ODM said about Azimio's leadership

Meanwhile, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party dismissed plans by Azimio la Umoja constituent parties to replace Raila as the leader of the opposition coalition.

In a press briefing on Monday, August 19, ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga criticised Azimio leaders questioning Raila's commitment to the opposition.

Wanga said it was in bad faith for Azimio leaders to hide behind the recent appointment of ODM officials to the Cabinet to undermine the former prime minister.

According to Wanga, some Azimio leaders were attempting to arm-twist Raila into endorsing them ahead of the 2027 elections.
