"We are experiencing a power outage affecting several parts of the country, except sections of North Rift and Western regions.
"We apologise for the inconvenience and kindly ask for your patience as our engineers work swiftly to restore service," said KPLC.

The electricity distributor assured customers it would update them as soon as possible on the progress of the power restoration efforts.

When was the last power outage in Kenya?

The announcement came in under a week after KPLC announced a similar disruption in the distribution of power.

On Friday, August 30, Kenya Power alerted customers of a widespread power outage affecting several parts of the country.

However, the outage did not affect the North Rift and Western regions.

Kenya Power electricity backup plan

The two near-countrywide blackouts come five months after KPLC unveiled a backup plan.

In March 2024, Kenya Power, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, launched a backup National Control Centre to minimise frequent outages.

KPLC Managing Director Joseph Siror revealed that the facility was set up in the Coast region at a cost of KSh 50 million.

The facility was aimed at safeguarding the security of the electricity supply, providing an alternative despatch point in case of failure of the main control centre.

The backup facility gets electricity supply from various power generation sources and dispatches it to various consumers across the country based on cost and demand.
