Amidst concerns that President William Ruto is relaunching ghost projects, senior government officials will inspect development programmes countrywide.

The director of communications for the National Government Coordination Secretariat (NGCS), Andrew Teyie, announced on Monday, September 9, that the Interior Ministry and the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary would work together to carry out the inspection from September 10, 2024, to September 14, 2024.

According to Citizen Digital, the inspection teams will start in the Eastern and Coast regions and then move on to the North Eastern, Nairobi, Central, Rift Valley, Nyanza, and Western regions.

The Standard reported that Special Economic Zones (SEZs) at Dongo Kundu and Athi River will be evaluated.

Which Ruto projects are scheduled for inspection?

  1. Kenya Leather Industrial Park (Kenanie Leather Industrial Park) in Machakos, Ukambani region.
  2. Production of genetically modified cotton and seeds in Kitui, Tharaka Nithi, Meru and Mtwapa. The government seeks to increase the acreage under production from 26,000 acres to 200,000 acres.
  3. Amoe.
  4. Inspection and completion of Special Economic Zones at Dongo Kundu and Athi River.
  5. The affordable housing programme. According to Mudavadi's office, the following units are under construction: Moke Gardens in Athi River (4,118 units), 220 civil servant houses in Embu, 1,582 units in Mombasa, 172 units in Kwale and 400 units in Embu.
  6. Road projects. The government noted that 6,000km of roads were under construction. These include:
  • Chiakariga-Marimanti-Gatunga Road (36km) in Tharaka Nithi.
  • Nkubu - Rubiri – Kamurita in Meru county (12km).
  • Kwale and Ukunda township roads -Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA).
  • Mwache – Mteza in Mombasa – KeNHA Lot 2: Mtwapa - Kwa Kadzengo in Kilifi
  • Bamba - Ganze – Kilifi 56km) by Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).

7. Technical Vocational Education and Training(TVET institutions in Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale and Mombasa).

8. Bachuma Livestock Export Zone (LEZ) in Taita Taveta.

9. Development and operationalisation of ports, including the Port of Mombasa.

10. Refurbishment of county commissioners offices in Machakos, Kwale and Isiolo counties.

11. National Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) enhancement project.

12. Ultra-modern Tuna Fish Hub at Liwatoni in Mombasa.

13. Galana-Kulalu food security project in Kilifi county.
