Content creator and radio presenter Deyanar Kimani has explained her decision to charge men asking for her phone number.

Do Kenyan men pay for women's numbers?

Speaking to K24 TV on Wednesday, September 18, Deyanar said that most men do not accept being turned down by a woman.

According to the radio host, men persist even when a woman informs them they are in a serious relationship.

This prompted Deyanar to devise a way to keep off unwanted advances from men.

She said that charging KSh 10,000 to get her number has put off some men, but some gladly pay the amount.

“Right now, telling a man you already have a boyfriend won’t work. Telling them you are not in the suitable headspace to date won’t work.
But when you tell them you want my number, and I ask for money, some men won’t accept it. The ones who really want it will pay, and some will pay,” she said.

The host wondered whether Deyana felt obligated to chat with the men who paid to get her number.

“Yes, because I have been paid for my time. I might go for lunch but you have to pay for that time because I am just not a free good.”

Many men found her comments preposterous, saying they would never pay to get a woman’s number.

“You will be single forever.”

@MorrisWambua16:

“Who, in this era, still pleads for phone numbers? Keep your phone number. I don't think anyone needs it that bad.”

@Mainaminor:

“Who is this now?”

@n_ndovu:

“What is this? We stopped forcing issues long ago.”

Why does woman want M-Pesa to hide number?

In other news, a Kenyan woman posted a video on TikTok asking Safaricom to introduce a feature that would hide her number from people she sends money to.

The lady complained that some people who receive money from her send her unwelcome messages.

Kenyans agreed that the need for data protection is important and that Safaricom should heed the request.
