Safaricom has announced increased internet speeds for its home and business customers to meet the growing need for faster speeds.

Internet connectivity has become a mainstay in Kenya's economic and social activities due to the increased need for fast data transfer and processing as well as internet-based entertainment.

“The needs of our enterprise customers are changing each day with the growing need to use technology. The enhanced fibre for business plans will allow our enterprise customers have a worry-free experience with the provision of back up data,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said in a statement released by Safaricom.

What are Safaricom's new internet speeds?

Notably, Safaricom has introduced a new platinum package that will offer customers speeds of up to 1000Mbps for KSh 20000.

"We have enhanced our Home Internet speeds to cater to the increased demand and usage by offering reliable connectivity and enhanced value for our customers. The introduction of the new speeds offers the capability of handling the most demanding online activities with ease, including high-definition streaming 4K/8K, gaming, large file transfers, cloud computing, and virtual reality," Ndegwa added.

The company noted that customers with active subscriptions will be upgraded to the new speeds immediately.

The speeds are in line with an earlier exclusive report by TUKO.co.ke on Safaricom's move to take on Elon Musk's Starlink.

Comparing internet speeds in Kenya

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke analysed and compared internet speeds and prices for major internet providers in Kenya.

Some of the major providers compared were Starlink, Safaricom, Airtel, Zuku, and Faiba, among others.

Notably, Safaricom's diamond package and Starlink's unlimited broadband internet plans reach speeds of up to 100 Mbps; however, the prices differ significantly.
