Nairobi - The Mother of slain Meru political activist and blogger Daniel Muthiani alias 'Sniper' caused a scene outside the Senate chambers on Tuesday, August 20, the second day of Governor Kawira Mwangaza's impeachment hearing.

How Sniper's mother caused scene at Senate

Meru county government CECM for legal affairs Dickson Munene had just taken the stand when the elderly woman, namely Anne Kanjeru, let out a scream catching the attention of Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

The speaker was to ignore the noise until it grew to seemingly cause a nuisance.

Kingi paused the proceedings and ordered the sergeant at arms to restore calm by carrying the woman out of the buildings.

Despite Kanjeru's objections and 'stubbornness,' the parliament security operatives managed to eject her from the Senate and move her to a distant location, allowing the proceedings to resume.

How Sniper's murder haunted Mwangaza

Sniper's murder was among the issues that shaped the Meru governor's trial in the Senate plenary.

In an instance, Homa Bay senator Moses Kajwang' put Mwangaza to task over the death of the blogger, suggesting the magnitude of the matter.

"People are dancing on the grave of Sniper. Can the governor tell us whether she is a suspect and if she is among those taken to court on suspicion or allegations of killing Sniper, because we cannot use that innocent boy to settle political scores and it is unfortunate that all parties are choosing to dance on the grave of Sniper," remarked Kajwang.

In her response, the embattled county boss denied having a hand in the murder of the blogger, restating that the police had never picked her up to record a statement.

She said the investigators carried out their probe at her residence and left.

In January 2024, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) preferred murder charges against two people as regards Sniper's brutal killing.

The two were; Murangiri Kenneth Guantai, a police officer and brother of Mwangaza, and Vincent Mureithi.

Sniper's badly mutilated body was discovered on December 17 last year after days of going missing.

Kawira Mwangaza's woes

The embattled county chief executive was impeached on August 8 when 49 out of 69 MCAs voted to oust her from office.

Mwangaza faced accusations of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and violation of the constitution.

This was the governor's third impeachment attempt after others in the last two years.

Mwangaza was saved by a Senate committee in 2022 after she was impeached for the first time.

Another ouster attempt came in November 2023, when she was saved in a plenary of the Upper House.
