Winfred Yavi has outlined her next target just a few days after winning the women's 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics.

The Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete sprinted to a brilliant win to dethrone the champion from Tokyo three years ago, Peruth Chemutai of Uganda.

The 24-year-old bided her time well as she let Beatrice Chepkoech and Chemutai dominate the race before stepping on the pedal on the home stretch.

Her winning time of 8:52.76 was a new Olympic record as Chemutai settled for silver. Kenya's Faith Cherotich came in third for the bronze.

Winfred Yavi targets Beatrice Chepkoech's record

Yavi is now the Olympic and world champion after winning the latter in Budapest last year. She now has a complete set of global titles, but she has another thing on her mind.

What is the women's 3000m steeplechase world record?

She now has the world record in her sights. Chepkoech currently holds the record, which she set in 2018 after running 8:44.32 in Monaco. Yavi is the second fastest woman ever, but Chepkoeach is the only person to have ever dipped below 8:50.

"It is always good to break records, and that is my target," she told Gulf Daily News.

The Makueni-born athlete also discussed plans to switch to other events later in her career. She has already won multiple medals in the 1500m and 5000m events at the Asian Games and Arab Championships.

Why Yavi chose Bahrain over Kenya

The Olympic champion switched her allegiance to Bahrain when she was 15 years old.

She still partly trains in Kenya but represents the Middle Eastern nation in international tournaments.

TUKO.co.ke has previously reported on why Yavi dumped Kenya for Bahrain.
