Reggie Theus was born in Inglewood, California in October 1957. He was a 6'7″ shooting guard who played at UNLV before being drafted #9 overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1978 NBA Draft. Theus played for Chicago until 1984 and then played for the Sacramento Kings from 1984 to 1988, the Atlanta Hawks from 1988 to 1989, the Orlando Magic from 1989 to 1990, and the New Jersey Nets from 1990 to 1991. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and was a two time NBA All-Star.

Theus transitioned to coaching and coached the Las Vegas Slam of the ABA in 2002. He served as an assistant coach at Louisville from 2003 to 2005 and coached at New Mexico State from 2005 to 2007.
