Father Of School Boy Who Died After Falling From Swing Pens Emotional Message: "I've Paid Too Much"

• Caleb Odanga marked his seventh birthday in June this year and that would be his last one ever, as he would die two months later
• The youngster met his tragic end after falling off a merry-go-round carousel in Ruiru while on a school trip in early August
• Odanga was admitted to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) where he died on Friday, September 1

Nairobi - Peter Mwangi is a devastated parent this evening following the death of his only child and son Caleb Odanga.

The seven-year-old lost the battle on Friday, September 1, after being in a coma state for about three weeks following an accident during their school trip.

Until his death, Odanga was a grade one pupil at Green Angels Academy situated in Githurai, Kiambu county.

While on the expedition at the Ruiru-based Destiny Gardens with his fellow learners, Odanga fell off a merry-go-round, the accident sending him to the aforementioned state of unconsciousness.

He would then be booked into the intensive care unit of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), where medics unsuccessfully strived to bring him back to his healthy self.

Odanga's father's pain

Putting up with the pain, Odanga's father resorted to writing to express the grief he was enduring in these trying moments.

Mwangi was at pains to admit the loss of his 'bundle of joy', asking for solace from the Supreme Being he believes in.

"Caleb my precious boy. My bundle of Joy, my true North. Oh God, as a human being l have paid too much. I have met grief in the fiercest way. It hurts so bad. Nitie nguvu mteule," he wrote.

The medics at KUTRRH had advised the baby's family to sign a document of consent allowing them to disconnect him from the machines, as he was in an irredeemable state.

Prior to his death, the family had considered flying him to India for a second opinion.

The family, which had hoped the boy would recover, was left with a huge hospital bill of at least KSh 1.5 million.

They asked for help from well-wishers to help them settle the bill as they began the plans to lay their only son to rest.

Teachers summoned over pupil's fall

Earlier, six teachers at the late Odanga's school recorded statements following his tragic fall.

Police in the Ruiru sub-county said they are investigating a case of negligence on either of the parties.

Detectives visited the scene of the incident, Destiny Gardens, whose management and staff were interrogated on the safety of their equipment and the readiness of the support team to handle such emergencies.

Alex Shikondi, the lead investigator, said they would leave no stone unturned, and everyone found culpable would be dealt with according to law.
