Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has been fined KSh 500,000 for the second time for skipping the Senate's summon.

The governor was expected to appear before the Senate's Energy Committee and respond to queries regarding the Mradi gas explosion in Embakasi but did not show up.

The tragic fire incident left three people dead, with scores sustaining injuries.

Why Edwin Sifuna wants Johnson Sakaja arrested?

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna expressed his disappointment following the governor's failure to present himself before the committee.

The committee is chaired by Nyeri senator Wahome Wamatinga, and Sifuna is a member.

They resolved to fine the governor KSh 500, 000, with Sifuna further calling on the Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet Koome to arrest the governor and present him before the committee.

''The Senate Energy Committe looking into the Mradi gas explosion in Embakasi has resolved to fine Governor Sakaja another KSh 500k, and requested the IG of police to arrest him to the committee on Thursday 25 April. He failed to appear again this morning.'' Sifuna wrote in his official X account.

Johnson Sakaja skips audit reports summon

Sakaja has skipped two Senate summons in a row this week. On Monday, April 8, he skipped a session by Public Accounts Committee that was supposed to discuss the county's 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 financial audit reports.

However, Sakaja requested that the discussion be pushed to a later date as he was out of the country.

In solidarity with Sifuna, Narok senator Ledama Olekina said the National Police Service NPS) should arrest Sakaja.

'' Whoever is protecting Sakaja must know he is an accomplice and must look in the mirror and let justice prevail. NPS if you believe in following the law arrest Mr. Sherehe and deliver him to the senate,'' Ledama said.

Sakaja- Sifuna wars

Sakaja and Sifuna bitterly exchanged words when the two met the Senate committee in February, before the Roads, Transport and Housing Committee.

Sakaja had earlier on been slapped with a fine of KSh 500,000 by the same committee for failing to appear, again ordering his arrest in November 2023.
