Nairobi - Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale has called out his Kenya Kwanza colleagues for not doing their job.

During a Senate session on Wednesday, May 9, Khalwale observed that the ruling alliance was failing in its oversight role.

The lawmaker claimed he was disturbed, adding that it is those in the minority who keep pushing the right agenda while they are in the wrong.

He reminded the legislators that they were not elected to support the sitting government's policies in the August House.

"Mr Speaker, I don't know. I'm very disturbed when I hear a lot of voices from the minority side, pushing the correct agenda and the majority on the majority side defending the wrong agenda.
I wonder who told Members of Parliament that you are, elected to come to Parliament so as to support the government even when in its policy the government is wrong. Who told you?" he posed.

What are senators supposed to do according to Khalwale

The veteran politician reminded the lawmakers of the independence of the arms of government.

Khalwale added that the lawmakers' main role should be offering constructive criticism to make operations better.

"It is our responsibility on the majority side and on the minority side to critically critique government policy so that we make it better," he added.

Khalwale accuses Ruto, Wetang'ula of betraying him

Separately, Khalwale has called upon National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula to uphold honesty in his leadership during President William Ruto's administration.

Khalwale reminisced about their relationship in 2015 when he faced life-threatening situations in Kakamega while advocating for Wetang'ula's presidential candidacy.

Expressing disappointment, the senator highlighted feeling abandoned by the executive despite their unwavering support for Ruto's stance on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

His loyalty persisted even when Wetang'ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had not shifted their allegiance to the now ruling party, both before and during the 2022 general elections.

The lawmaker disclosed that he, the head of state, and Wetang'ula had reached an understanding to review his situation after the duo convinced him to step down for Cleophas Malala in the gubernatorial race.
