Kirinyaga: Police in Kirinyaga county have retrieved the body of a 5-year-old girl, whose mother fell with her into river Nyamindi.

Gichugu sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira said the body of Precious Wairimu was discovered at Gichogo village on Saturday, May 4.

According to the police boss, residents who were fetching water from the river saw the body floating inside.

Wachira noted that the efforts to recover the body of the woman, identified as Maureen Wangui, were ongoing.

“We are working together with the local residents to see the body of her mother, Maureen Wangui is discovered,” Wachira said as reported by Citizen Digital.

As reported earlier, Maureen fell into Nyamindi River with her child strapped on her back and drowned.

The woman's uncle, Stephen Maembe, said the motives for her actions remain unknown, adding that a watchman at a coffee factory witnessed the incident and raised the alarm, but it was too late.

How a 3-year-old boy drowned in Kisumu

In other sad news, residents of Nyakach sub-county were left in shock following the tragic death of a young boy.

In the Thursday, April 4 incident, the 3-year-old boy is believed to have drowned in an open borehole.

A report by Citizen Digital revealed that the minor was playing around the market when tragedy struck.

He was in the company of his friends as they played when he accidentally fell inside the open borehole.

Upper Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Dawin Orina confirmed the incident, disclosing the boy had come to the market in the company of his mother, a trader.
