A three-year-old boy has shocked his parents and doctors after waking up in what can be described as a medical miracle.

Doctors had declared Levi Wright brain dead after he fell into a river in Beaver County, Utah while playing on his toy tractor.

How was Levi rescued from the river?

KSL 5 TV reports that Levi's mother, Kallie, jumped into the river and rescued him a mile downstream from where he'd last been seen.

According to a 911 report from the incident, the youngster disappeared beneath the surface amid strong currents.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and joined the frantic search before Levi's mum ultimately dove into the fast-flowing river.

Paramedics administered life-saving treatment as Levi was rushed to the hospital, where medics managed to restore his heartbeat.

Levi's medical miracle

Despite efforts to revive him, the poor lad did not regain consciousness, prompting the doctors to inform his parents to say their final goodbyes.

However, Levi shocked everyone when he regained consciousness in a stunning turn of events.

"I am shaking; we don't know much, but the doctor said it was okay for me to get excited about that, and I am! My baby is so tough!" the excited mother wrote on Facebook.

Doctors and social media users who have been following the case branded the recovery a "miracle".

Elsewhere, a young girl of about one and a half years is lucky to be alive after she was tossed out of a matatu that was crashing.

The vehicle was heading to Kisii from Kitale when it lost its brakes and rolled down a cliff at Chepsangor, Tinderet, in Nandi County.

First responders found her near the wreckage with minor bruises on the face but no significant injury.
