Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are detaining six suspects in a theft incident in Nairobi's Kasarani area on Monday, June 3.

The group comprises four police officers.

According to the DCI, the suspects trailed the accountant of Rophine International School from a bank in Utawala.

How much were thieving Kasarani cops found with?

They later broke into his car and made away with KSh 2.2 million.

Detectives from the larger Nairobi region and Kayole sub-county apprehended the suspects at the Kasarani Police Station public parking yard.

Upon making the arrests, the law enforcers recovered KSh 473,000 from the suspects, believed to be part of the massive cash loot; KSh 350,000 was found in the car, and the remaining KSh 123,000 stashed in their pockets.

"A total of KSh 473,000 believed to be part of the stolen amount was recovered from the six, who were ambushed in the station's official police vehicle," the DCI said via the X network.

How Nairobi school accountant lost KSh 2.2m

The victim of the incident told the officers that he had withdrawn over KSh 2.2 million, an amount intended for the payment of casual workers at the aforesaid school.

All the while, the suspects plotted on him without his knowledge.

They boarded a saloon car, registration details KCR 959D, with which they trailed the accountant to the school.

Unaware of the plot on his back, the accountant took some of the money and then locked his car before entering the school compound.

He returned to his car moments later but was shocked to find the cash missing, with the car having been broken into.

How DCI detectives traced suspects in KSh 2.2m theft

He booked the matter with the officers at the Mihang'o Police Station whose officers embarked on a probe.

Using crucial actionable intelligence, the officers camped in the Utawala area searching for one of the suspects they had positively identified in CCTV footage.

The said suspect was, however, not present in Utawala, the detectives coming to learn that he had been driven out of the location in a Subaru car.

Acting on intelligence, the officers left for the Kasarani station, where they ambushed the six in a GK vehicle; they forced them to identify themselves in the presence of the Sub-County Police Commander, his deputy and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer.

The thieving officers were identified as Antony Ndegwa Anwal, Daniel Lekakeny Sunkuli, Simon Macharia Maina (of DCI Kasarani), and Antony Mwenda (KPS Ruai); their civilian accomplices are Lukas Magwaga and Young Wakise.

They await arraignment as the investigators conclude their work.

Makueni cop arrested over rice theft

This came moments after the arrest of a police officer alongside two other suspects for allegedly stealing 522 bags of rice in Kibwezi, Makueni county.

The three men allegedly hijacked a lorry transporting rice from Mombasa to Nairobi on Wednesday, June 5 at 2:30 a.m.

Additionally, the officers detained a Probox with the registration number KDD 396T in connection with the rice theft.
