Nairobi - Protests and chaos have been reported in parts of Nairobi county during the ongoing demolition of houses along riparian land.

On Monday, May 6, three people were allegedly killed in Mukuru and Mathare by bulldozers, precipitating chaos.

How two children died in Mukuru

In Mukuru Kwa Reuben, angry residents chased away government officials who were demolishing houses in riparian areas of the slums.

TV 47 reported that the chaos and running battle erupted after two children were killed as bulldozers demolished the houses built in riparian areas that are prone to floods.

The demolition was suspended after police officers stepped in and restored order.

In Mathare slums, a 17-year-old boy was reportedly killed by an eviction team on Monday, May 6, 2024, a few hours after President William Ruto toured the area.

The incident caused protests as residents engaged police in a running battle. Police used teargas canisters to disperse them before removing the body of the boy from the scene.

A woman was shot and injured during the protests but was rushed to hospital in stable condition.

How did Ian die?

As reported earlier, a woman from Kisumu grappled with immense pain following the tragic loss of her son, who was killed while in their house in Mathare North during government-led demolitions.

Ian's death was a consequence of the ongoing demolitions of houses built on riparian lands, prompted by the relentless heavy downpours that have claimed numerous lives.

In a video captured by Eastleigh Voice, the distraught woman revealed that Ian had been battling sickle cell disease. At the time of his passing, she had left to procure medicine for him.
