Nairobi - President William Ruto has toured the Mathare area to assess the damage left behind by the ongoing heavy floods.

Addressing the residents on Monday, May 6, the president announced a stipend for all flood victims in Nairobi.

What will happen to displaced people in Mathare

Ruto said the Kenya Kwanza government will give each of the 40,000 households displaced by floods KSh 10,000 to look for alternative accommodation for three months as the government seeks a lasting solution.

"We have 40,000 households who were affected during the evacuation for safety reasons. Every household will receive KSh 10,000 to look for alternative housing.
We will give them the money for their 3-month rent as the government looks for another alternative," Ruto announced.

The president, who was accompanied by Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, PS Raymond Omollo and his Housing counterpart Charles Hinga, added the government will soon award the tender for 5,000 affordable housing in Kiamaiko.

Why did government demolish houses at Mukuru kwa Rueben?

Meanwhile, residents of Mukuru kwa Rueben found themselves counting losses after the government ordered the demolishing of their houses.

The houses that were mostly made out of iron sheets were trampled on and destroyed by bulldozers on Friday, May 3.

The demolished houses were said to be near riverbanks.

In a video shared by Citizen TV, residents watched helplessly as the bulldozers brought down their houses.
