Inspector Wolde Biliso, head of the Traffic Accident Prevention and Control Division at the Wolaita Zone Police Department, said the accident happened after the bus travelling from Wolaita Sodo City to the Dauro zone veered off the road and plunged into the river.

Biliso told state-owned Fana Broadcasting Corporate that 28 people died on the spot while 19 others were injured.

“So far, 28 people have died in the accident and 19 others have been seriously injured,” Biliso said as reported by Fana Broadcasting Corporate.

The authorities mentioned that the accident was serious and indicated that the death toll could increase, given the number of critically injured passengers.

Photos shared online showed that the roof, brutally deformed by the impact, had been ripped off the entire top of the bus.

The images showed the bus lying in the river, having apparently come down a long, steep slope.
