Preliminary investigations indicate the woman, who was cohabiting with a man, had gone missing for two weeks before neighbours discovered the shallow grave in a tea plantation next to the home.

According to neighbours, the missing man was living with the woman, but he is not the biological father of the five children.

Confirming the incident, area chief Lenny Kirui said a manhunt had been launched for the man suspected to be behind the twin murders.

The woman is being held at Sotik Police Station while the bodies were taken to Kapkatet Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.

In Trans Nzoia county, police obtained a court order to exhume an unknown number of bodies believed to be buried in a shallow grave.

Homicide detectives retrieved the body of a woman wrapped in a blanket from the shallow grave outside a mud house in Kaliwa village, Waitaluk ward.

The woman whose body was exhumed was identified as that of Alice Chemutai, who was a resident of Kitale town.

Trans Nzoia DCI boss Paul Songok led homicide officers at the home where the body was exhumed.

Three suspects were arrested as the homicide officers were deployed to guard a home last night.
