A Kenyan studying in Algeria has been sentenced to two months in prison for stabbing a Palestinian colleague.

Ian Koima Kiprotich, a post-graduate architecture student at the University Constantine, was given the sentence by a court on Tuesday.

The Kenyan did not have a lawyer. Kenyans in Algeria condemned the sentence, saying Kiprotich did not get justice.

According to one of the Kenyans who sought anonymity, the two had an altercation, and during which Kiprotich was stabbed five times.

He was rushed to Centre Hospital-Universitaire de Constantine in critical condition, where he spent three days in the intensive care unit.

Upon being discharged from the hospital, Kiprotich was arrested and charged with attacking the Palestinian and insulting his family.

“He was stabbed in the neck, groin and thighs by the Palestinian student. Kiprotich fell on the floor, bleeding profusely. He lost consciousness,” the student said.

He added that colleagues from Malawi, Burundi and Tanzania took Kiprotich to hospital.

“I thank God Kiprotich made it out of hospital. He lost a lot of blood. There was blood was all over his room,” he said.

Kiprotich could not hire a lawyer. He asked for a public defender in vain, the protesting Kenyans said.

The Palestinian was accorded a public lawyer, while Kiprotich was given a translator as the court proceedings were in Arabic.

"Three witnesses were ready to testify for Kiprotich. He was denied a fair hearing as there was no time to prepare his defence. The witnesses were ready to inform the court that Kiprotich was attacked in his room. We understand they were threatened by the attacker,"said the Kenyan student.

Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, the prime suspect in the Kware murders, reportedly walked out of his cell at Gigiri Police Station on August 20 after having breakfast, according to sources.

This occurred in the wake of a security lapse caused by the mysterious departure of 12 Eritreans who were also in custody at the station.

Witnesses and sources indicated that Khalusha, who was housed in a cell separate from the Eritreans, managed to leave his cell on Tuesday morning.

The incident reportedly followed a heated argument between the officers at the station, which may have contributed to the security breach.

An officer involved in the investigation mentioned that Khalusha had time to converse with the police before his departure and was not being closely monitored at the time.

He was reportedly the only one in his cell, while the Eritreans were in an adjacent cell and four other suspects were in another.

The Gigiri Police Station has six cells, three on each side of a corridor. Following the routine headcount, which takes place between 5am and 6am, Khalusha was served breakfast like the other suspects before he managed to leave the facility.

The Swahili paper reported that the State House spent approximately KSh 3 million to convene a meeting aimed at persuading university student leaders to endorse the new higher education funding system.

However, the meeting did not end well, as the students' grievances were not fully addressed.

Nearly 100 university student leaders from various institutions across the country attended the five-hour meeting at the State House, which began at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 21, and concluded around 2:00 pm.

Each attendee pocketed KSh 25,000 as transport allowance, according to several leaders who attended.

President William Ruto, Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala, and Interior Affairs Secretary Raymond Omollo attended the meeting, as confirmed by Evans Serem, vice president of the Kabarak University Students' Association, who was among those present and shared on social media.

The meeting took place just days after a previous meeting with student leaders at the Kenya School of Government ended in chaos.

Like the meeting, the earlier gathering focused on the controversial university education funding system introduced by the government.

Student leaders told the paper that the meeting was so secretive that many vice-chancellors were unaware that their students had been invited to the State House.

Sources at the meeting indicated that only influential student leaders and those close to the authorities were invited.

The State House or President William Ruto, who typically publishes photos after such high-level meetings, had not released any details about the meeting by the time of publication.

However, photos taken by some of the student leaders have circulated online.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed said the discussions focused on the state of university education and the new funding model.

It was an open meeting where attendees voiced their grievances. However, according to those who attended, none of the speakers supported the controversial funding system.
