Ride-hailing firms in Kenya have increased fare rates for all categories of fleets.

Why digital taxi drivers downed their tools

This followed a strike by digital taxi drivers in July 2024, who accused the companies of overexploitation.

The drivers took to the streets of Nairobi, complaining about low ride charges, high commission charges by the companies, and a lack of pick-up and drop-off points in the CBD.

Most drivers wanted the companies to raise ride charges and reduce commissions and other unnecessary charges.

What are the new Little App ride fares?

Little, a Pan-African Super App platform proudly made in Kenya, announced a 15% increase in ride rates.

Little Taxi Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kamal Budhabhatti noted that the move was aimed at cushioning drivers against economic challenges like high fuel prices.

Budhabhatti emphasised that the review in ride rates ensures that drivers will earn a fairer wage and helps ensure the reliability, convenience, and safety of the services offered to clients.

“Little has always been a listening and caring partner. We have heard and analyzed the requests from our drivers. Despite the tough economic times that all Kenyans are facing, we believe it is important to support the individuals who keep our platform running," said Budhabhatti

The CEO explained that the increase may mean slightly higher costs for clients, but it guarantees more reliable and convenient services.

Drivers welcomed the move, praising Little and other ride-hailing apps for being economically sensitive and swiftly addressing their concerns.

Little Taxi reinforces its position as a leading, socially responsible player in the ride-hailing industry—dedicated to providing not just services but solutions that benefit both its drivers and passengers.

Uber raises fares

Uber Kenya also announced a 10% increase in the minimum fare to KSh 220.

The ride-hailing App also introduced new categories, including Uber Comfort and Chap Chap Priority, to enhance driver earnings.

Uber said that to increase driver satisfaction; they have initiated reward programmes that offer cash bonuses and incentives for top-performing drivers, with additional partnerships to reduce operating costs.
