A young man from Remore Village in Marsabit county is stranded instead of attending university due to a lack of school fees.

Like many needy students across the country, Hussein Guyo and his parents cannot raise the money required for admission to a higher learning institution.

Speaking in a report by Citizen TV, Hussein said he scored an A– (minus) in the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

He enrolled at Masinde Muliro University to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Civil and Structural Engineering, but his education was short-lived in his first year after he fell ill.

“I finished high school and got an A- of 74 points in 2016, then in 2017, I enrolled at the Masinde Muliro University Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering,” stated Hussein.

Hussein drops out of university

He paused his schooling for three years, seeking medical attention.

However, his attempts to go back to school have failed. He is unable to apply for a student loan because the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) listed him ineligible.

“When I wanted to resume in 2021, KUCCPS, which was helping me in my studies, ruled me out, and now I have no source of help,” Guyo lamented.

He then applied for a different course, Quantity Survey, at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and was accepted.

His hopes of changing his family's situation as the firstborn in a family of nine look slim as the mother cannot pay his fees.

“I have nine children, and there is no one to help me; I do not have a job, Hussein wants to go back to school, and I have nothing,” Darmi Dida, Hussein’s mother, stated.

B+ student works menial jobs after failing to join university

In an almost similar story reported by TUKO.co.ke, Ephraim Wesonga Makunia, a young man from Bungoma, has been forced to do menial jobs to raise money for his school fees.

Ephraim sat for KCSE in 2022 and scored a B+ of 69 points, qualifying him for the university, but he has yet to join.

These youth join the list of needy, bright students who might not take up their places in the local universities due to a lack of government funding.

State Department of Higher Education Principal Secretary Betreace Inyangala, in a past briefing, explained that the education ministry was grappling with a funding shortfall in the 2024/25 fiscal year.
