Has depression increased among govt employees?

In 2023, Public Service Commission chairperson Anthony Muchiri said most public servants took home less than a third of their basic pay due to high taxes.

Data showed that depression cases among workers increased in the last four years, affecting their morale and performance.

The commission proposed exempting public officers who service mortgages from additional taxes and levying the housing levy on the basic salary rather than the gross salary.
