Hellen Obiri will be back in the streets of New York City to defend her title in November.

The Kenyan is coming off a decent Olympics campaign in Paris, where she won bronze in the women's marathon.

She is seeking to win her third straight marathon major after winning New York and Boston.

Obiri made her marathon debut in 2022 in New York but finished sixth. However, her first win in the distance came in April of the following year in Boston.

Since then, the 34-year-old has only lost one marathon a few weeks ago at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She set her personal best of 2:23:10.

At 34, Obiri has now won two silver medals and a bronze at the Olympic Games, per World Athletics. She has probably participated in her final Olympic Games.

Prize money for New York Marathon

Winners from the elite field receive $100,000 (Ksh13 million) in prize money, second-place finishers receive $60,000, and third-placed athletes receive $40,000, per CBS News.

In her two New York City Marathons, Obiri has taken home $110,000 (Ksh14mil).

The Kenyan star has also won two Boston Marathon titles. She received a total prize money of $300,000 (Ksh38.6mil), per the Boston Athletics Association.

She could receive another big cheque if she crosses the tape first in November in New York.

Obiri's competition for New York Marathon

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that Obiri will face serious competition at the 2024 New York City Marathon.

She has less than three months to prepare and will come up against compatriot Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkirui (2:17:49), the fastest athlete in the women's field.

Veterans Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia and Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot will also be competing.
