Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted that Mt. Kenya voters living in Nairobi may not support Johnson Sakaja in future elections.

What did Gachagua say about Nairobi leadership?

While addressing Nairobi residents on Friday, September 20, Gachagua stated that Mt. Kenya voters will organise themselves properly in preparation for the 2027 General Election.

"There is no other day, we will vote for someone without a proper plan. Here in Nairobi, I am going to tell you guys how we will live," Gachagua said.

He further stated that any leader elected by Nairobi residents should be capable of meeting their demands.

He added that leaders should address them with respect and without making any threats.

"...But anybody who has been voted for and still wants the support of these people to ensure that their needs are met," he said.

Eviction of Wakulima Market traders

Gachagua faulted Sakaja for sanctioning the eviction of Wakulima Market traders.

County inspectorate officers clashed with traders on Tuesday morning, September 12, as they enforced their relocation to the newly opened Kangundo Road Market.

The county aimed to decongest the city by relocating small-scale traders to the outskirts to improve traffic flow in the city centre.

Chaos erupted, prompting the intervention of the police, who were forced to deploy tear gas and water cannons to quell the chaos.

He said it would have been rational had the governor engaged the traders before enforcing the eviction as stipulated in a notice served to them.

In a seemingly conciliatory tone, the typically abrasive Gachagua reminded Sakaja, whom he referred to as "my younger brother", that the people whose relocation he was enforcing had voted for him in the 2022 elections.

The deputy president implied that the city county boss had gone back on the promises and commitments he made to the traders while seeking their votes.
