The family of Rebecca Cheptegei has revealed the heartbreaking reaction of her children upon learning about their mother's condition.

Cheptegei was a victim of a recent brutal attack reportedly over a land tussle with her lover, Dickson Ndiema.

Where are Cheptegei's children?

Speaking to The Standard, Cheptegei’s father shared that the children had been taken in by their grandmother, Agnes Ndiema.

He said the marathoner’s daughters aged nine and 11, had gone to church when the attack occurred.

The distraught father added that his grandchildren wept bitterly after being told about the assault on their mother.

"Her children are crying in the house after hearing about the attack," he said. "I have asked my wife to take care of them."

How severe were Cheptegei's burns?

The attack left the 33-year-old athlete with severe skin damage and inhalation burns that affected her throat and airways.

Cheptegei died just two days after doctors expressed concerns about potential multi-organ failure due to the severity of her injuries.

Details indicate that the sportswoman sustained 80% burns while her alleged attacker had 30% burns.

Her family was on the verge of airlifting her to Nairobi for specialised treatment when she succumbed.

Why was Cheptegei attacked?

According to Cheptegei's family, the sportswoman was allegedly attacked due to a land dispute.

The two former lovers had recently been to the DCI offices seeking legal redress before things took an unexpected turn.

Cheptegei's attacker was also caught in the flames before neighbours extinguished the fire and took them both to the hospital.

Her demise has opened wounds of different Kenyan athletes who've been allegedly killed by their partners.

The most recent was Agnes Tirop, who was found dead on Wednesday, October 13, 2021.

Her lover, Emmanuel Ibrahim Kipleting, who was believed to be behind the murder, was her personal coach.
