Rongai - A hopeless mother of two little ones knows the literal phrase when it rains, it pours.

Carren Mwende lives in a house without a roof after the landlady ordered the removal of the iron sheets by a young man.

Mwende said the landlady removed the roof after she claimed Mwende had KSh 8,000 rent arrears which she refused to pay.

"We were living in a two-roomed house before my husband was accused of stealing and put behind bars. We used to pay KSh 5,000 rent, but since I could not afford that alone, I moved to this house where I pay KSh 3,000. When I moved to the new house, I had arrears of the previous, which I did clear and also paid the deposit for the new house," she explained.

However, the landlady claimed she had arrears which led her to send someone to remove the roof of the new house.

Kajiado family sleeping in cold

Despite seeking help from the area chief and other ways to make peace, all efforts have been unfruitful, leaving her without help.

"It's extremely cold. Flu has attacked me, and the kids. You can even tell from the way I'm talking. I can't risk leaving my kids alone in this house. My son has never gone to school since that incident happened.
The young one told me how they had been turned into a laughingstock for living in a house with no roof. I feel so bad, I haven't been able to eat anything, just water," the Rongai mother said.

Kahawa Wendani family spends night in cold

Last month, a Nairobi mum and her children slept outside after being kicked out by the landlord over KSh 6k rent.

The landlord kicked Catherine Muthoni and her schoolgoing children out of their house at night, pending a two-month house rent bill.

She reached out to a social justice hero, Derrick Mbugua, who talked to the landlord, and despite allowing them back for the night, he wanted them out the following day.

The Kahawa Wendani woman who said she washed clothes to earn a living said the kids in their school uniforms had eaten nothing.
