Nyeri Boy Quits School To Care For Sick Sister, Says He Changes Her Diapers

Nyeri - A young man's hope of becoming an engineer has been cut short after being forced to ditch school.

David Waweru was compelled to quit high school to help his distressed mother, Grace Waweru take care of his sister, Beth.

The boy only studied for a year in high school before circumstances saw him drop out of secondary to help at home.

Selling charcoal to get money

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the 16-year-old boy said he had responsibilities for his sister with a disability.

"I help my mother watch over Beth and my other siblings. When mum is not around, I am the one who changes my sister's diapers. Sometimes I go out to look for work, like selling charcoal to get money and take care of my family," he said.

Despite the setback, the teenager said he longed to return to school and see his dream of becoming an engineer.

"I would like to continue my studies and help my family escape this situation. I want to build my mum a mansion and buy her a car so she can be proud of me one day," he added.

Assistance to return to school

The boy from Nyeri noted his father was alive but did not help the family and held nothing against him.

"He is still my father, and though he deserted us, he remains my father. If he asks for help from me, and I can assist, I will be more than willing," he added.

Waweru sought assistance to return to school, complete his education, and pursue his engineering career.
