Millions of Kenyans transition to secondary and tertiary institutions each year after obtaining the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), respectively.

However, some Kenyans misplace or lose these crucial documents.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) explained how to replace the certificates online on its website.

What's the cost of replacing the KCSE/KCPE certificate?

According to KNEC, a candidate or person seeking to replace their certificate must present a copy of their lost certificate, a copy of their identity card (ID), a passport-size photo, and a police abstract.

"Clients must prove that their certificates are lost/destroyed before applying for an examinations result certification," KNEC stated.

The examination body revealed it costs KSh 5,220 to replace each certificate.

"The fees required for issuance of examination results certification is KSh 5,220 inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT). The names on the national ID/passport/birth certificate must match those used during the examination," KNEC said.

KNEC stated that applicants who legally changed their names must attach documents proving the change, such as a marriage certificate or a copy of the Kenya gazette in which the changed name appears.

What's the application procedure?

  • One is required to register an account online on the KNEC website.
  • Login to the website using the credentials sent to your email.
  • From the menu, select the certificate that was lost.
  • Please fill in your details, including the index number, the type of the exam, and the year, and then click find.
  • Attach a copy of the lost certificate/result slip, a copy of ID on both sides, a police abstract, a passport-size photo and a confirmation from the registrar of persons available at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) building in Nairobi.
  • Submit the application.
  • Wait for the verification.
  • You will receive an SMS notifying you to log in and pay.
  • Pay the amount (KSh 5,220) and wait for the application to be processed.
  • Keep checking online to get updated on the progress.
  • When the process is complete, you will be notified through an SMS to collect your certificate.

KNEC lists dos and don'ts

  • Fees are paid to KNEC's accounts through the following banks: Co-op Bank, National Bank of Kenya, Equity Bank, and Kenya Commercial Bank.
  • KNEC does not accept cheques, money or postal orders.
  • Kenyans must collect the certificates within two years lest they are disposed of.
  • Incomplete application forms will be declined.
  • Bank slips presented 12 months after the banking date will not be accepted, and there will be no refund.
  • Applications with differing examination details will be declined.

Elsewhere, Vincent Kipkoech, a project manager in Western Australia, shared he scored 372 marks in the KCPE national examinations.

He also bagged an A plain in KCSE and joined Kenyatta University (KU), where he pursued a course in chemical engineering.

His educational achievements inspired other social media users to share their education journey in the comment section.
