Police in Narok County arrested two men on Monday, May 20, while shipping 81 donkeys to an illegal slaughterhouse.

The two, identified as Oloshiro Pere and Luka Manyara, were arraigned on Tuesday, May 21, and charged with ferrying donkeys without veterinary approval and possession of stolen items.

How did the two get arrested?

According to a Citizen Digital report, the two were arrested after members of the public shared a tip with the police.

They found the donkeys hidden at Mlima Nugu Forest, awaiting transportation to the illegal slaughterhouse within Kedong ranch.

According to the police report, two of the four suspects managed to escape from police officers, with the two others under police custody.

Following intelligence reports, officers managed to impede a heard of 81 donkeys concealed within Mlima Nugu forest within Ntulele sub-location and believed to be in transit to an area within Kedong ranch for illegal slaughter and trade of its meat and skin," read a police report.

Where were the donkeys taken?

The stolen donkeys were taken to the Kenya Society for Protection and Care of Animals.

The donkeys were later transferred to a Naivasha ranch for safety, as police continue to crack down on illegal donkey businesses in the area and across the country.

Suspects disclose the destination of the donkey meat

Meanwhile, in Kirinyaga, Kirwarwa area chief Zacharia Miano Muchiri said residents arrested suspects while slaughtering donkeys at River Sagana.

However, three managed to escape the angry mob.

Miano said to save their lives, one of the suspects disclosed their illegal business and said the meat was being sold in the Burma market in Nairobi.

Murang'a man arrested with donkey meat in Murang'a

The incident happened barely a week after a man was arrested by police with donkey meat for sale in Nairobi.

Residents learned about the meat while helping the man pull his truck after it got stuck.

After extensive interrogation by the Maragua assistant county commissioner, the man admitted the meat was being transferred to Nairobi for sale in Kayole.
