The dare-devilish act of a group of people onboard a flatbed truck with sand crossing a river in Makueni was documented on Friday, April 26.

An amateur clip showed the driver striving to steer the lorry past the submerged bridge on River Kwa Muswii in the Kasikeu area of Sultan Hamud, this before the raging floodwaters swept it.

The driver had braved himself to make it through the flooded river oblivious to the imminent tragedy.

He would ultimately fail to control the heavy vehicle in the face of the heavy currents that overpowered it.

The lorry was swept, decanting all its load -sand and passengers- to the river.

All the while, curious onlookers followed distantly and keenly before they started ululating on the lorry's family to withstand the currents.

Kenya Red Cross on Makueni incident

The number of those swept by the waters remained unknown at the time of this publication.

Leading the rescue operation at the scene were responders from the Kenya Red Cross.

"In Sultan Hamud, Makueni County, a distressing incident has occurred: a lorry ferrying people was swept away by raging waters. We are at the scene and actively responding to the situation," the humanitarian agency posted on X (previously Twitter).

TUKO.co.ke had earlier reported that the rescue efforts successfully retrieved two women.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that over 10 drowned, while the fate of the remaining passengers remained uncertain.

Kenyans on social media condemned the driver and passengers for risking their lives.
