Weatherman Warns Of More Devastating Rainfall In Nairobi Over The Weekend: "Heavy To Very Heavy"

  • The warning came with a directive to residents of Nairobi to be on alert for heavy rains as of Friday, May 3
  • Following their directive, President William Ruto further postponed the reopening of schools until further notice as rains set to intensity in the coming days

Residents living in Nairobi metropolitan region have been urged to stay alert over possible heavy rains over the weekend.

Which parts of Nairobi will be affected?

In its latest weather update on Friday, May 3, the Kenya Meteorological Department indicated there would be low, moderate and very heavy rainfalls in Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, and Kiambu counties.

The 24-hour weather pattern will be experienced from Friday, May 3 to Saturday, May 4.

In Nairobi county, Embakasi South, Kasarani, Embakasi East and Roysambu will experience very heavy rains while Westlands, parts of Roysambu, Ruaraka and parts of Embakasi South will have moderate rains.

Low rainfall will be expected in Embakasi West, Embakasi Central, Kamkunji, Starehe, parts of Makadara, and Mathare.

Heavy rains in Kajiado, Murang'a and Kiambu

Heavy rains will pound in some areas in Kajiado North, Kajiado East, Kajiado West and Kajiado Central sub-counties.

Kikuyu, Gatundu South, Kiambaa will have low rainfall while Ruiru will experience high rains. Gatundu North and Juja will be heavily hit by rains.

School reopening postponed again

During his national address, President William Ruto postponed the reopening of schools till further notice, after Ministry of Education set Monday, May 6, for the reopening.

Additionally, Ruto directed government agencies to be swift in responding to flood situations.

In further supporting response team, Ruto said he had directed the National Treasury to provide resources for the teams tasked with response.

Cyclone Hidaya to hit Kenyan Coast

Earlier on, the weatherman had also warned about a possible cyclone that could hit Mombasa and areas adjacent to the ocean.

The cyclone will come with intensified double rains and strong winds. The winds are projected to exceed 40 knots between May 3-6.
