Nairobi - Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has come to the defence of Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli.

Amisi claimed Masengeli's case is politically motivated and a result of internal conflicts between President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

During a meeting with youth from Tuwan Ward for breakfast at his home in Matisi on Friday, September 13, Amisi urged the government to stop dragging Masengeli into what he deemed political games.

He stressed that Masengeli, who recently assumed office, should not be held responsible for the mistakes of his predecessors.

"We don't want Masengeli to be dragged into Rigathi and Ruto's politics. He is a well-educated policeman with a master's degree, and he uses his intellect; he won't be just any ordinary officer," Amisi asserted.

Who is to blame for missing protesters?

The Saboti MP blamed former IG Japhet Koome, arguing that any investigations into police misconduct should focus on Koome's tenure in office.

He highlighted that the deaths and issues being raised occurred during Koome's tenure and were not under Masengeli's watch.

"The person who should be going to court to answer questions is Koome. People died during Koome's reign, not during Masengeli's time. So, Masengeli cannot be made a scapegoat for mistakes committed by the previous police regime," Amisi insisted.

Amisi called for a thorough investigation to identify who was responsible for the alleged misconduct, reiterating that Masengeli inherited an already troubled system.

"Koome must bear his own cross. Let Koome be called to answer questions, but not Masengeli. Masengeli only recently took office and found the mess. Let them investigate who caused that mess," he added.

Masengeli found guilty after ignoring court summons

On Monday, September 9, Masengeli was summoned to court to address the disappearance of the three government critics.

However, the police chief delegated Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat of the Kenya Police Service to represent him, citing his presence in Wajir for security matters.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi found Masengeli guilty of disobeying court orders, arguing that impunity and open defiance would not be allowed.

He ruled that Masengeli had continued to hold the court at ransom after he failed to honour six summons.

The judge argued that the court could no longer ascertain what could have happened to three missing Kitengela individuals because of the acting IG's action.
